Clark Public Utilities’ increases
stabilization account to $11 million

Clark Public Utilities’ rate stabilization fund, created in 2004, has been increased by $6 million to $11 million. The additional $6 million came as a result of decreased operational expenses in 2007.

While operating revenues for the past year were lower than expected, operating expenses, primarily power costs, were nearly $11 million lower than projected, the utility’s chief financial officer, Rick Dyer, reported.

In addition to the $11 million set aside to protect the utility customers against future wholesale power increases, the utility is holding another $7 million in reserve, which could serve as an additional buffer. The $7 million is part of the $14 million the utility was paid by Bonneville Power Administration when it reassessed residential power sales agreements with private utilities in the northwest.

Dyer, in his year-end report to commissioners, said the utility is financially healthy and strong. He said the electric system added 2,318 new residential customers during 2007, the lowest number in four years. The residential growth rate was 1.4 percent for the year.

County seeks public input on
Dollars Corner road system

Public input is being sought by the Clark County Planning Department’s plans for a new traffic circulation plan for the Dollars Corner area on State Highway 502 at NE 72nd Avenue. The state highway will be widened and improved as a direct connection between Battle Ground and Interstate-5.

According to county planner Mike Mabrey, the primary considerations are safety and access near the intersection of 502 and NE 72nd Avenue.

The planning department will hold an open house at 6:30 pm. Thursday, March 6, to take citizen input. The meeting will be in the Fire District 11 station, 21609 NE 72nd Avenue.
