Mary Firstenburg dies
Mary Elizabeth Firstenburg
was planning to be a missionary, but then she
met Ed (E.W.) Firstenburg
at the age of 19, fell in
love, got married and began a 72-year adventure.
She was born in Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker, world traveler and volunteer. For more than 40 years, she served on the Board of Directors of First Independent, the region's largest privately-held, locally-owned bank. Mary was a member of the Priscilla Club, which founded the local Ridgefield Library. She was a member of the Ridgefield Study Club, the Ridgefield Garden Club and the Eastern Star. She was active in the local Parent Teacher Association and served as a Cub Scout den mother for several years. For many years Mary enjoyed volunteering at the Vancouver VA Medical Center as a Red Cross Gray Lady. Mary and E.W. both loved to travel. After turning 40, Mary learned to speak French and become quite fluent, serving as a translator when the couple traveled in French-speaking countries. Into her late 70s, Mary loved riding on the back of their Honda 90 while she and E.W. explored old logging roads and the deserts of the Southwest. Mary was an avid reader and she loved playing all kinds of card games, but especially bridge. She also loved to go on long walks "as long as the ground was flat." Mary was a volunteer and
philanthropist at heart.
She and her
husband made significant charitable gifts to local nonprofits in
