Rich Carson has role in PBS
Rich Carson, Hockinson, former Clark County planner, has been interviewed for a Public Broadcasting System documentary on urban planning in America that will be aired next year. Carson, in addition to having been a planner in the state of Washington, had been a planner with the Oregon Economic Development Department for Metro. Northern Lights Productions, Boston, is producing the three-part series, Making Sense of Place. Carson’s contribution is to contrast mandated state planning in Washington and Oregon. The Northern Lights documentary takes a look at planning in Phoenix and Cincinnati, in addition to the Vancouver-Portland area. Carson currently is an associate with Citygate Associates and is working with San Diego County’s department of planning.
Yo yo demonstrations part of Chinese yo yo demonstrations, along with music and fan and lion dancing, are being offered this evening by Taiwanese exchange students and host Evergreen Public Schools, Harmony and Ilahee Elementary Schools, and Covington Middle School. The program in Convention School, 11200 NE Rosewood Road, begins at 7 p.m. The Taiwanese exchange students, sponsored by the King Car Educational Foundation, have been with Evergreen district counterparts for the past two weeks. Spanish immersion classes The Vancouver School District will begin offering Spanish language immersion classes in kindergarten next year, reports Howard Yank, district resource coordinator. According to Yank, language immersion has proven to be highly effective in helping students achieve fluency in a second language, especially when it begins at an early age. The immersion classes will expand to higher grades as students proceed through school. Initially the classes will be offered at Harney Elementary School, 3212 E Evergreen Boulevard. Parents who may wish to place their children in the program can learn more by attending an information meeting in the Harney School at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Need to get a dangerous driver Southwest Washington Medical Center and AARP have teamed up to offer a free class to help family members and caregivers talk to loved ones whose driving may be posing a danger to themselves and others. The class is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the medical center’s Health Education Center, 400 Mother Joseph Way. For further information, call 514-2190. State School for the Deaf An update of the Washington State School for the Deaf’s campus master plan will be discussed during this evening’s 7 p.m. meeting of the Edgewood Park Neighborhood Association in Clarke Hall, room 150, in the school for the deaf, 611 Grand Boulevard. The ten-year master plan envisions construction of an over-20,000 square-foot building to replace several smaller structures. For further information, call 696-6525, extension 0401. Calendar The Vancouver City Council meets in workshop session at 4 p.m. today. The council also meets in a full session at 7 p.m. this evening. <> Clark County commissioners meet in regular session at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5. Commissioners are expected to accept two grants for juvenile court services. The first is a $350,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The second is a state grant of $213,977. Commissioners will also consider changes in development fees that would average 8 percent. <> The Puget Sound Blood Center is conducting a blood drive from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the parking lot of the Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 W. 39th Street. <> The Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council board meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the 6th floor training room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street.
