Vancouver Symphony
opens 30th season The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, directed by Salvador Brotons, opens its 30th season with Joseph Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat major, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, in the Skyview High School concert hall, 1300 NW 139th Street. Guest soloist for the Haydn piece is John Daniel, associate professor of music at Lawrence University, where he teaches trumpet. He served as principal trumpet with the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra and Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra for nine years and has performed with the San Antonio Symphony. The opening series also presents Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 in D Major, op. 107, the "Reformation" Symphony, and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor, the so-called "Unfinished Symphony. A one-hour lecture by Travis Hatton, music director of the Vancouver Children's Opera, precedes each concert. Tickets are $36 for reserved seating, $27 for general admission, $22 for seniors and $7 for students. For further information, call 735-7278. Camas-Washougal chamber elects officers Doug Anderson, Underwriters Laboratories, has been named president of the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce. He succeeds Kirk Bruce, Allstate Insurance. Also elected were Kathleen Romaine, acting vice president, and Damon Webster, second vice president. New board of directors for 2007-2009 are as follows: Amy Rose, Chris Dierickx, Larry Blaufus, Martha Martin, Mike Nerland and Rosemary Cooke. WSU Vancouver adds two new faculty members Washington State University Vancouver has added ten faculty members this fall. They join 123 other full-time faculty, 98 adjunct faculty and 140 other staff. Fall enrollment at WSU Vancouver is a record 2,555. The new faculty are as follows: George Fletcher, assistant professor of computer science, previously with Indiana University; Ginny Guido, assistant dean and regional director of nursing, most recently with the University of North Dakota; Edward Hagen, assistant professor of anthropology, most recently at Humboldt Universitaet zu Berlin, Germany; Stephen Henderson, assistant professor of environmental geophysics, formerly at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego; Thabiti Lewis, assistant professor of English, formerly Willamette University; Sheen Liu, assistant professor of finance, most recently at Youngstown State University; Rebecca Portnoy, assistant professor of management, previously at the University of Washington; Stephen Solovitz, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, previously with the University of Portland; Darryl Wood, assistant professor of criminal justice, previously at the University of Alaska; Wei Xue, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, most recently with the University of Minnesota. Calendar Arts Equity opens its 3rd season with Edward Albee's Seascape, designed and directed by Llewellyn J. Rhoe. Show times are 8 p.m. this evening, and tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Main Street Theatre, 606 Main Street. There is a Sunday, Sept. 16, matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $10 to $24.
