Vancouver Flyers to play in Propstra Stadium this summer

Owen Sanford, left, who will manage the Vancouver Flyers, Mike Clark, right, president of Collegiate Baseball of the West and Vancouver’s Arch Miller, center, today announced in Propstra Stadium the formation of the Vancouver Flyers, who will play baseball in the stadium this summer.

Collegiate baseball is coming to Propstra Stadium at Hudson’s Bay High School this summer. The home opener of the Vancouver Flyers, one of eight teams in a 38-game schedule Northwest Collegiate Summer Baseball League, is 6 p.m. Sunday, June 10, in the Vancouver School District’s elite baseball stadium that comfortably seats about 1,000.

The formation of the Vancouver baseball team and its entry in the summer collegiate league was announced at a news conference this afternoon instigated by Arch Miller, founder of Vancouver’s Friends of Baseball, whose ultimate goal is to have a professional baseball team in the city.

The Vancouver Flyers look like a good start. For the most part players will be northwest college baseball players, who will pay $500 to play the season and the chance to advance through American Amateur Baseball Congress’s annual national tournament in Huntsville, Texas, in mid-August.

Owen Sanford will manage the team, according to Mike Clark, president, American Collegiate Baseball of the West. Sanford played at Central Washington. In 2005 Sanford was assistant coach of the Wenatchee Apple Sox.

Teams in the league, in addition to the Vancouver Flyers, are Pacific Javelinas and Portland Titans, both of Portland, Bend Bucks, Olympia Athletics, Seaside Wildcats, Southern Oregon Riverdogs and Tacoma Cardinals.

Ticket prices are $5 in advance, $6 at the gate. Season passes which are available for $75, are and good for all NWCL games in Vancouver, Sckavone Field, Portland and Seaside.

The league will pay the Vancouver School District for use of the field, according to district superintendent John Erickson.

For further information on the team, advertising possibilities and becoming a host family for one of the players, call Clark at (800) 694-1940.

Fran McNa has been named coordinator for the dental program at the Free Clinic. She succeeds Ann Gilbert, who has accepted a research position with the University of Washington, but who will continue to work part-time work for the dental program.

McNa will be responsible for all aspects of the Free Clinic’s dental program, according to Free Clinic executive director Dennis Cole. These include children’s urgent and preventative dental care, community education and outreach, and limited adult restorative dental clinics.
