TUESDAY, Dec. 20, 2005 Carol Curtis to run for
reelection
Carol Curtis today announced that she will be a candidate for reelection to the nonpartisan Clark Public Utilities’ board of commissioners, a post that she has held for four terms. Curtis has been an active member of Clark County’s business and civic affairs community since the 1980s. She is a past president of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, past president and current member of the Clark College Foundation, and past president of the Responsible Growth Forum. She has been a member of the board of the Columbia River Economic Development Council since its inception, and is a past board member of the YWCA of Clark County. Curtis was one of the founders of the Windermere/Stellar Group real estate firm and currently is an associate broker. Susan Edwards is Curtis’s campaign manager. Vancouver The City of Vancouver will lobby the 2006 session of the state legislature to provide $1.92 million in the capital budget for the Washington State Patrol, to complete the patrol’s crime lab being built in Vancouver. The allocation would allow the second floor of the new facility to be completed. The city is also asking for $1 million for the Confluence Project, authority to use tax increment financing in helping pay for public infrastructure costs, and greater flexibility to make amendments to comprehensive growth management plans. The city also supports additional funding for the state Criminal Justice Commission, and to complete the statewide K-12 mapping program, and supports giving local police the authority to issue “e-tickets, according to Mark O. Brown, the city’s lobbyist. Brown says the city wants to stay focused during the 2006 session and to prepare for the longer, 105-day session that begins in 2007. Clark County Chamber of
Commerce The Clark County Chamber of Commerce has selected six companies to receive the chamber’s Best-in-County business awards. The Best-in-County Visibility Award was earned by iQ Credit Union for placing six branches in area high schools, which in addition, to be fully functioning, provide training for students. Hot Ovations Communications Coaching & Training Co. won the Best-in-County Networking Award for establishing Black Entrepreneurs of Clark County, a free monthly business roundtable and networking group. Goldman and Associates and the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay were co-winners of the Best-in-County Advocacy Award for their work in creating jobs for minorities and for individuals with disabilities. The Best-in-County Business Services Award was won by GT Multimedia for the company’s comprehensive communications, marketing and training offerings. The Rayonet Corporation received the Best-in-County Training Award for a program of hiring, training and providing cross training for local residents. Vancouver-based Rayonet provides national credit card service through its Total Merchant Concepts services. People State Rep. Deb Wallace (D-17th) has been appointed to the state House Education Committee. Wallace will begin serving on the committee when the 2006 short session begins Monday, Jan. 9.
