WEDNESDAY, Dec. 14, 2005 Jack Burkman to run for legislature
Jack Burkman, former Vancouver City Council member, announced Wednesday that he is a Democratic candidate for the 17th District legislative seat currently held by Republican Jim Dunn. A businessman for the past 30 years, who retired in 2005 after 27 years at Hewlett Packard, including 17 as a manager, Burkman left the Vancouver City Council in 2001 to spend more time with his family. Burkman is a member of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District board of trustees and is active in other civic endeavors. Ann Rivers named political
affairs director
Ann Rivers, well-known public and political affairs consultant, has been appointed political affairs director for the Building Industry Association of Clark County. Rivers succeeds Joel White, who left the organization after four years to become executive director of the Spokane Home Builders Association. Rivers, who has lived in La Center for the past 11 years, has worked on a number of local political campaigns and has represented private industry clients in public affairs. Rivers is a graduate of Central Michigan University. In announcing Rivers’ appointment, association president David Roewe also announced two promotions within the organization. Steve Madsen, the association’s legislative advocacy director and staff counsel, will become director of the association’s governmental affairs department. Mike Bomar, who has been communications director, will become public relations director. With a membership roster of nearly 1,000, the trade association represents the interests of businesses involved with land development and construction. Mary Keltz named county PR director Mary Keltz has been appointed director of public information and outreach for Clark County, county administrator Bill Barron announced. Keltz will succeed Lianne Forney, who in retiring next spring after holding the post for the past 17 years. “Over the last 17 years, Lianne has built a very capable and impressive PIO team that has been vital in connecting with our residents,” Barron said. “I am very pleased that she will be continuing as our PIO director through February to help Keltz assume her new role.” Keltz currently is a senior policy assistant for the board of county commissioners. Before joining the commissioners office in 1997, Keltz performed statewide duties as public information officer and as special assistant to the Director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, in Boise. Previously, Keltz worked as a reporter, editorial writer, and editor for newspapers in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon and earned a masters degree from the University of Washington. News brief Sharrefah Abdullah’s Hot Ovations Communications Coaching & Training Co. has won the Clark County Chamber of Commerce Best-in-County award for innovation in networking. The award presented Tuesday, was based the company’s creation of Black Entrepreneurs of Clark County, a free monthly business roundtable and networking group. Earlier Abdullah was named one of the Vancouver Business Journal’s Accomplished & Under 40 awards. Calendar The Clark County Health Department is holding the first of two educational forums to help businesses and organizations comply with the state’s newly implemented public smoking act. The first session is at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in Fire Station 83, 213 NE 120th Avenue. The second will be at 8 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard. n A half-day seminar explaining how to obtain state grants is being offered by 49th Legislative District Democratic members, Sen. Craig Pridemore and Representatives Bill Fromhold and Jim Moeller from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in the board hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street.
