FRIDAY, Dec. 9, 2005 Christmas 1846 is being
celebrated The Fort Vancouver National Historic Site brings the 1846 holiday season to life, in the replicated historic Hudson’s Bay fort, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Admission is free. Living history activities will be presented throughout the day. Story telling is scheduled for 10 a.m. Historic weapons and Christmas Day hunting will be demonstrated at 11 a.m. A reenactment of an Anglican Church service will be at noon. At 2:15 p.m. there will be dancing in the counting house. Council for the Homeless
presenting A ten-year draft plan to end homelessness in Clark County is being presented by the Ten-Year Planning Task Force at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way. The task force was created by the City of Vancouver, Clark County and the Council for the Homeless. appearing Clifford the Big Red Dog will be greeting guests at the 7700 NE Fourth Plain Boulevard Barnes & Noble Bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, as part of the book seller’s Holiday Book Fair. Children may have their pictures taken with Clifford. And 15 to 25 percent of book sales to patrons who have Fort Vancouver Regional Library District vouchers will be donated to the library district foundation, to be used for programs and services. Vouchers may be obtained at any local library branch or may be downloaded by going to www.fvrl.org. C-TRAN installed solar-powered bus stops C-TRAN this month will begin installing solar-powered bus stops. Forty of the solar-powered will provide light for the stop and also a flashing signal light showing that a bus is approaching. Another 50 of the new stops will not be lighted but will be equipped with the flashing signal light. The solar-powered bus stops are financed by a federal grant. Beware of $101 fine Because of a significant number of cars being stolen as they idle unoccupied in driveways, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department is reminding motorists of other legal consequences of unattended motor vehicles: RCW 46.61.600: “No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key and effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon any perceptible grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway. The fine for leaving a car running without an occupant is $101.” News briefs Bicycle owners can donate bicycles and qualify for a suitable tax deduction when they give bicycles to The Community Cycling Center through Southwest Washington Medical Center this weekend. Bicycles may be dropped off at the medical center main campus’s 92nd Avenue entrance between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and at the Memorial Campus, 3400 Main Street between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. The Community Cycling Center distributes refurbished bicycles and new helmets to underprivileged children. n Access to NE 134th Street from Interstate 5 will be messed up most of Sunday, Dec. 10, as construction crews re-align both north- and south-bound exit ramps. Lane closures on I-5 at the location can be expected, too. Motorists should seek alternate routes. Calendar As part of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commemoration, traditional flute music and stories by Keith Bear and Gary Statous are being presented at 7 p.m. this evening in Fort Vancouver High School. The event is free. n The Tent of Many Voices ends its ten-day run Sunday, Dec. 11. Meanwhile, free presentations on the Lewis and Clark Expedition are offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in tents in the parking area of the O. O. Howard House in Vancouver Barracks. n An adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is being presented at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday night, Dec. 10, and at 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 11, in the Slocum House Theatre, 605 Esther Street. Admission is $10, $8 for seniors and students. For reservations, call 696-2427. n The West Columbia Gorge Humane Society is conducting a $20 pet microchipping clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in Cascade Park PETCO, 305 Chkalov Drive. No appointment is necessary. n The Dave Friesen Quintet presents a Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Fourth Plain and F Street. Admission is $15. n LSW Architects’ Arts Competition winning art works will be on display in the LSW Architects Gallery, 2300 Main Street, from noon until 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, during Vancouver’s Second Saturday Art Walk. n The 104th U.S. Army Reserve Division annual holiday tree lighting is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, on the parade field in front of Division Headquarters in Vancouver Barracks.
