WEDNESDAY, Dec. 7, 2005 Library board asking for
public The board of trustees of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District has scheduled a December public hearing to accept information from the public regarding the district’s two “heartbreaking” losses at the polls for a bond issue that would have remodeled and expanded the library system in the City of Vancouver. The most recent loss was in November, when a measure within the city was approved by a whopping 59.4 percent majority, but not whopping enough. The law regarding voter approval of bond issues financed by property taxes requires a 60 percent majority. Over 60 percent of the voters approved creation of a library district in Vancouver, and the same voters approved the bond issue that would have paid for expansion of the Vancouver Community and Cascade Park Libraries by 19,287 to 13,197 votes—59.37 percent. As library trustee Jerry King puts it, “it was a heartbreaking loss. It really was, wasn’t it, to come to close to 60 percent, so very close, to 59.37 percent and yet not to be a winner?” The trustees meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in Library Hall in the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard. The question before the board is: “In light of two failed bond measures, what action should the library board take to solve the problem of insufficient facilities in Vancouver?” Dave Friesen concert The Dave Friesen Quintet Christmas Concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, will benefit St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Vancouver. The concert will be in the church at Fourth Plain Boulevard and F Street. Accompanying Friesen will be guitarist Jerry Hahn, saxophonist Rob Davis, drummer William Thomas, and vocalist and pianist Jeannie Hoffman. Admission is $15.
