Unusual bronze musical sculptures by Eugene artist Steve Reinmuth enliven the First Friday gala in southern Washington’s largest art gallery, Art on the Boulevard, which opens at 5 p.m. today. Also on exhibit are works by northwest painters Bill and Anne Jameson. The event that continues until 8 p.m. is, according to sponsors Friends of the Arts, “open to the public at no charge and includes an opportunity to meet artists, and enjoy live musical entertainment and complementary light refreshments, including Northwest wines.” Reinmuth’s and the Jamesons’ work will remain on display through Saturday, Oct. 28. Clark College music professor Don Appert has been honored with an American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers ASCAPLUS award for the second consecutive year. ASCAPLUS is an awards program that provides cash and recognition to active writers in the early and mid-stages of their careers and to established composers whose main activity is outside of broadcast media. Appert, in his 17th season as music director and conductor of the Clark College Orchestra, is preparing for international performances of Prism, a work for chamber orchestras. He will conduct Prism with the Adany Symphony in Turkey in December and with the Oradea State Philharmonic in Romania in March. Last year, Appert performed his work Elegy for String Orchestra in France, Romania, Portugal and Slovakia. The Vancouver city council
and the board The Vancouver city council and the board of Clark County commissioners, including county administrator Bill Barron, are holding a second joint meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in City Hall. On the agenda for the workshop session are common growth management issues affecting both the city and the county. These include development and redevelopment inside the Vancouver city limits, proposed changes to the county Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, proposed expansion of the Vancouver Urban Growth Area, transportation issues related to growth, and joint and cooperative planning. headlining Actor Victor Rivas Rivers is the featured speaker at the YWCA of Clark County annual benefit luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Rivers tells his own story, which included horrific child abuse, hard-core gang membership, and becoming senior class president. A graduate of Florida State University, where he played football, Rivers has acted in more than two dozen films, has been the subject of the documentary Breaking the Silence: Journeys of Hope, and wrote the best selling memoir, A Private Family Matter.
