Community Choices 2010, Clark County’s good health watchdog organization, reports that in 2004 over 60 percent of Clark County adults were either overweight or obese. The effect of the increasing number of fat people is being seen beyond individual health. Recognizing that the number of overweight people is increasing, Southwest Washington Medical Center’s $154 million expansion and Firstenburg Patient Tower are being built with wider room doors. One of the reasons it takes so many emergency medical technicians and firefighters to respond to emergency residential calls is that it takes that number of people to get fat sick people into ambulances. Community Choices 2010 will address health, safety , and sustainability of the regional food supply during a Healthy Food Forecast workshop from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Nationally known expert on food security and food policy Mark Winne will present an overview of the food system, and will discuss areas where communities can identify gaps and find ways to solve problems in local food systems. Reservations are required for the workshop. For further information, call Christine Perry, 567-1067. Transportation planning for
northwest An open house is being held at 5:30 p.m. this evening in the Clark County Public Safety complex, 505 NW 179th Street, to provide for public discussion of county plans for transportation improvements along the Highway 5 corridor north of the Clark County fairgrounds and NE 179th Street. The area north of 178th Street is now part of the urban growth boundary within the county’s comprehensive plan. Urban growth areas require urban-level road improvements and planning for other urban services. Effort underway to revise The process of revising Battle Ground’s Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, originally adopted in December 2004, continues at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, during a three-hour open house in City Hall chambers. The public meeting will set the stage for meetings to follow by the city planning commission and ultimately before the city council. The city’s planning efforts focus on lands proposed for addition to the city’s urban growth boundary, to occur when Clark County completes reworking its comprehensive growth plan. The county’s plan, for which an Environmental Impact Statement is being reviewed, is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Further information is available by going to www.cityofbg.org, or by calling city Community Development director Brian Carrico. Growth management EIS comment period extended The comment period on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for amending Clark County’s Comprehensive Growth Management Plan has been extended from Tuesday, Oct. 3, to Tuesday, Oct. 10, reports Marty Snell, director of Clark County Community Planning. County commissioners have set a four-hour hearing on the plan for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Public Services Building, 1300 Franklin Street.
