City of Vancouver seeking The City of Vancouver/Clark County Community Mediation Services is seeking nominations for the the first Creative Community Peacemaker Awards. The awards were designed to recognize individuals or groups who have thought of creative ways to make peace within families or the community, or who have found creative solutions for compelling current conflicts. Nominees may have dealt with a variety of issues such as youth-adult understanding, land use solutions, violence prevention, building community, cultural understanding, human rights, and/or peer mediation. A special Media Award will be given for a media news story that illustrates a creative solution to a local conflict. Awards will be given to a broad range of individuals and organizations. Completed nomination forms must be submitted by Monday, October 9 by 5:30 p.m. Forms are available at www.cityofvancouver.us/mediation The awards will be presented at a fun and exciting community event and celebration, “How Strangers Become Neighbors: Building cultures of peace in our Families and our Community.” The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 28 at the First Congregational Church, 1220 NE 68th St. in Hazel Dell.
County to host Community In recognition of National Drug & Alcohol Addiction Recovery Month, Clark County will host the 5th annual Community Recovery Forum on Thursday, September 28, from 6-9 pm at the First United Methodist Church, Jason Lee Hall, located at 33rd & Main Street, Vancouver. Open free to the public, this year’s theme is “Build a stronger, healthier community.” The forum will raise awareness about community resources, celebrate individuals and families in recovery and reach out to those seeking help. Speakers will include Shane Gardner, Chair of the Clark County Substance Abuse Advisory Board, Judge Vernon L. Schreiber, local district court judge will share his perspective “from the bench” on the impact of substance abuse in our community. Pastor Dave White, New Life Friends Church & Lord’s Gym will talk about the a church community’s commitment to support individuals in recovery. In addition, a mother and her son will share their story about how the ACCESS TO RECOVERY program changed her life. On hand will be representatives sharing information about local treatment options. Parents, friends, family, teachers, counselors, employers, pastors, social workers and any one interested is invited to attend. Wanted: nonprofit voices, views Local nonprofits are invited to make their voices heard and their views known at a Nonprofit Town Hall Friday, September 29, from noon to 2 p.m. at the YWCA, 3609 Main Street, Vancouver. Input gathered will be presented at a first-ever national Nonprofit Congress in Washington D.C. in October. “Nonprofit staff, board members, volunteers, donors and other supporters are urged to participate in our Nonprofit Town Hall to help ensure the national priorities reflect the experiences and desires of our local organizations,” says Jeanne Kojis, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Network of Southwest Washington. “Local Town Halls across the country are providing the grassroots information, inspiration and insight to guide the Nonprofit Congress in developing an action plan that can benefit all nonprofits.” Kojis will attend the Nonprofit Congress as a delegate from Washington State. The local Town Hall event is free, but reservations are required by September 27. Complimentary lunch will be provided to those who RSVP. Charitable leaders and their allies are convening more than 115 Town Hall meetings nationwide to define their shared values, discuss the role of the nonprofit sector in our society, identify challenges, generate solutions to the issues all nonprofits face and unite around opportunities for the future. On October 16 -17, 2006, about 500 nonprofit delegates and 200 at-large participants will gather in Washington, D.C. to review the information gathered through the Town Halls, affirm shared values and create a collective action plan for the sector.
