Marshall Award nominees announced

Three Clark County professionals have been nominated for the General George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award presented by Bank of Clark County. The candidates will be introduced to members of the award
selection committee next month, beginning the process of choosing the 2006 recipient for the annual award. The award will be presented by Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard at a special award ceremony on Wednesday,
November 8.

Now in its 18th year, the Marshall Public Leadership Award is organized by the Vancouver National
Historic Reserve Trust as one of many Celebrate Freedom programs that honor the legacy of General George C. Marshall.

Nominees for the 2006 Marshall Public Leadership Award are:

  •  Midge A. Dobbs, 31, Camas. Dobbs is Director of Sales & Services for Southwest Washington
    Convention & Visitors Bureau. She graduated from University of Phoenix with a B.S. in business administration.

  • VaNessa L. Duplessie,34, Vancouver. Duplessie is a technology consultant with 10 years of finance and banking experience. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.S. in Business Administration. Ms. Duplessie participated in the Leadership Clark County program in 2005.

  • Morgan D. Miles, 27, Vancouver. Miles works as the Casework Supervisor for the Vancouver office of Congressman Brian Baird. In addition, he is currently the campaign manager for a Clark County Clerk race.  He is a Reed College graduate and has a degree in Arts and Sciences with a major in
    Political Science.

Building Industry Association elects
2007 Board members

The Building Industry Association of Clark County unanimously approved new board members at its annual meeting September 19.

The 2007 Executive Board includes: President Sam Vilhauer, S. Vilhauer Inc.; Vice President Hugh Hall, Lynnwood Homes; VP Secretary Morall Olson, MJ Olson Enterprises; VP Treasurere Brian Fleedtood, Columbia Credit Union; VP Associate AJ Gomez, Global Security &Communication, Inc.; and Past President, Ken Winkelman, Ken Winkelman General Contractor, Inc.

The following nominations are for two-year terms: Builder Director John Fazzolari, Fazzolari Custom Homes, Inc.; Supplier Director Bill Montgomery, Rinker Materials; Supporter Director Rod Mastrud, Discover Mortgage; and Subcontractor Director Tina Inman, Henderson & Daughter.

New board members will be installed at the Building Industry Association’s dinner meeting on November 14th and will take office January 1, 2007.

Clark College International Programs
viewbook receives top honors

Clark College’s new International Programs viewbook received an award of excellence in the 2006 design competition of the University and College Designers Association.

Wei Zhuang, Clark’s lead graphic designer, accepted the award at UCDA’s 36th Annual Design Conference in Austin, TX on September 16.

“I feel fortunate to be able to work in an environment where there are many talented individuals who are eager to provide assistance in order to make a project successful,” says Zhuang. Out of 1,600 entries nationwide, just 143 awards were given. The viewbook, designed to appeal to students from other countries, featured text by Lynne Toh, formerly of Student Affairs, and Director of Marketing Brian Scott, as well as photographs by
college photographer Ian Beckett.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will hold the first concert of its 2006-07 regular subscription season with "A Taste of Old Russia." Performances are Saturday, October 7 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, October 8 at 7 p.m. at Skyview H.S. Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th St., Vancouver. Under the Director of Conductor and Music
Director Salvador Brotons, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will perform the Manfred Symphony, Tchaikovsky's rarely-heard symphony of the  dramatic poem by Byron. The concert will also feature guest pianist Gary Davenport, performing Rachmaninoff's Virtuoso masterwork, Piano Concert No. 3. "We're excited to be able to bring to our audience many of the talented musicians in our area," said Paul Winters, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

Friends of Vancouver Community Library will host their fall book sale of donated, used books on Saturday, Oct. 7, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Library Hall at Vancouver Community Library. No book costs more than $1.00. “Mass Market” paperbacks will cost $.50. Only donated books will be for sale with no library discards. A special pre-sale for Friends of the Library members will be held Friday, Oct. 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friends of the Library memberships may also be purchased at the door for admittance to the special sale. Book donations are collected in a bin located in the lobby of Vancouver Community Library. For more information call 360-695-1566.
