Not often seen in southeast Vancouver, once every 13 years, to be
precise, if it Marcia Howery to receive
Marcia Howery, a former Montessori teacher who was the first employee hired by the Free Clinic in 1990, has been named as the 2006 recipient of the Clark County Family YMCA’s Spirit of Health Award. The award will be presented during the YMCA’s Strong Communities Benefit Luncheon at noon, Monday, Sept. 18, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Dan Fouts, former University of Oregon quarterback, NFL Hall of Fame member, and currently an ABC sports analyst, is the keynote speaker. Howery joined the fledgling Free Clinic as a clinic coordinator. Currently she is the Free Clinic’s clinic director, managing more than 500 volunteers, most of whom are medical practitioners, including doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and technicians. During that time Howery says the clinic has helped treat tens of thousands of patients. “Marcia’s compassion is only matched by her wealth of knowledge in putting resources together to make a difference in the lives of Clark County residents,” the award citation reads. “Marcia has been instrumental in the clinic’s success.” The clinic was founded by retired physician Sam Beall. The clinic provides health care to persons without health insurance or other resources to pay for vital health services. For further information on the $35 luncheon, call 258-3868. Salvador Brotons to solo Salvador Brotons, music director of the Vancouver Symphony will temporarily give up his position at the podium to pick up the flute and give Saturday’s opening night concert audience a taste of his solo virtuosity by performing Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp. Valerie Muzzolini, principal harpist for the Seattle Symphony, will join Brotons for the Mozart piece. The rest of the 7 p.m., Sept. 9, concert in Skyview High School’s concert hall, 1300 NE 139th Street, is given over to Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Symphony #5. Vancouver’s premier barbecued sausage and chicken festival has opened its three-day run at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Grounds, 400 S. Andresen Road, and continues through 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10. Admission is $1 per person. There is no additional admission charge for the beer garden. Musical entertainment

Solemn 9/11 commemoration A solemn commemoration of the 2001 attack on America will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, September 11, at the Vancouver Landing on the Columbia River, 120 Columbia Street. The ceremony concludes at 3:15 p.m. with a flyover by two F-15 Fighter jets from the 142nd Air National guard. The ceremony opens with a formal flag ceremony by members of the Vancouver Fire and Police Departments, the Clark County Sheriff’s office and the 104th U.S. Army Reserve Division. The Portland Fire Bureau fire boar will present a red, white and blue water show, and a commemorative wreath will be laid. News brief Columbia Credit Union has opened a home loan center in its Ridgefield branch in the Tri-Mountain Shopping Center. The center will be managed by Kathy Boespflug.
