League of Women Voters
drawing crowd of candidates

At least 30 political candidates are expected to make presentations at the League of Women Voters of Clark County’s Candidates Night Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Clark College’s Gaiser Hall, reports league president Jane Van Dyke. Many candidates are expected to be present by 6:30 p.m. to meet voters. The formal session begins at 7 p.m.

Candidate, whose races could be decided at the Sept. 19 election and who have said they will participate in the league’s event are as follows:

U.S. Senate, Democrats Mohammad H. Said and Michael Goodspaceguy Nelson and Republican Warren E. Hanson; 3rd Congressional District, Republican Michael Messmore; 17th Legislative District representative, Position 1, Democrats Pat Campbell and Jack Burkman; Clark County Clerk, Democrats Sherry Parker and MarCine Miles; state Supreme Court justices, Position 2, Susan Owens; Position 9, Jeanette Burrage; state Appeals Court judge, Position 1, Brent D. Boger and incumbent Joel Penoyar. These candidates will make opening and closing remarks and will answer questions.

Candidates in races that will not be decided until the general election on Nov. 8, who will make two-minute presentations, are as follows: U.S. Senate, Libertarian B. Barry Missoudi; 15th Legislative District, state senator, Democrat Tomas A. Villaneuva; 15th Legislative District 15, Position 1, incumbent Republican Bruce Chandler; 17th Legislative District, Position 1, incumbent Republican Jim Dunn; 17th Legislative District, position 2, incumbent Democrat Deb Wallace and Republican Paul Harris; 18th Legislative District, Position 1, Democrat Jonathan Fant;18th Legislative District, Position 2, incumbent Republican Ed Orcutt and Democrat Julie McCord; 49 Legislative District, Position 1, incumbent Democrat Bill Fromhold and Republican Nancy De Leo; 49th Legislative District, Position 2, incumbent Democrat Jim Moeller and Republican Sharon Long; Clark County Assessor, incumbent Democrat Linda Franklin and Republican Bill Jameson; Clark County Clerk, Republican Baine Wilson; Clark County Commissioner, District 3, incumbent Democrat Steve Stuart and Republican Bruce Hagensen; and Clark County Sheriff, incumbent Republican Garry Lucas and Democrat Timothy Shotwell.

The Vancouver Library District bond issue will be debated by Dale Reed Jr., Citizens for Better Libraries, and Debbie Larner, Committee for FAIR Library Management.

Innovative Services NW, a family of five interconnected nonprofit agencies that assist and support children, adults and families in our community who have disabilities or other disadvantages, has appointed three vice presidents from its ranks in a realignment designed to reduce costs and improve levels of performance, according to .board chairman Kevin Myles.

Launda Carroll has been promoted to vice president of marketing and program development. Carl Cecka has been promoted to vice president of operations. Mike Wilson has been promoted to vice president of development. Each reports to Innovative Services NW president Bob Gaylor.

City encouraging email
comments on B & O tax

Vancouver, having set over hearings on a proposed business and occupation tax for 60 days, is encouraging further dialogue with affected businesses and others, particularly by email, where an easy-to-use form is set up and can be filled out an a few minutes.
