Taste of Vancouver starts on classical note Thursday

Vancouver Symphony as the Taste of
Vancouver opens Thursday in Esther
Short Park.

The seventh annual Taste of Vancouver begins its four-day run in Esther Short Park on a classical note Thursday, with a Vancouver Symphony concert under the direction of guest conductor Huw Edwards.

Admission is free on Thursday, reports KC Fuller, Taste of Vancouver originator and director.

North by Northwest opens the first day of the taste with a 4 p.m. concert. The symphony concert is sponsored by Riverview Community Bank. Edwards will present light classical music, including a preview of the symphony’s 2006-2007 concerts.

The Taste of Vancouver’s family fun, music and food continues between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 18 and 19, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20. Adult admission, $6; children 6 to 12, $3; children under 6, free.

The musical lineup is as follows: Friday, Misty River, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Radio Disney, 2-to-3:30 p.m., Johnny 5, 4-6:30 p.m., Rain, (two shows) 7:30-8:30 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. Saturday, Radio Disney, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Johnny Martin, 2-4 p.m., The Antics, 4:30-6:30 p.m. , Super Diamond, (two shows) 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. Sunday, Radio Disney, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., The Big Package, 1:15 p.m., Dirty Martini, 2:30-4:30 p.m., Ray Charles Tribute (two shows) 5:30-6:30 p.m. and 7-8 p.m.

Food is being provided by Casablanca Mediterranean Kitchen, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Rib City Grill, Gray’s at the Park, Baja Fresh, Golden Tuck Thai Cuisine and Johnsonville Brats

State transportation planners to meet in Vancouver

The state Transportation Commission and the state Department of Transportation have completed gathering information on its 20-year plan from elected officials, businesses and transportation planners and will hold a session in Vancouver to hear from the transportation system users next week.

The commission and the Southwest Regional Transportation Council will hold a public informational session at 5:30 .m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street

Vancouver is one of 12 stops in a series of statewide meetings. Representatives of the Lewis and Clark Trail Scenic Byway, and Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway will also be available.

Community Foundation grant inquiry deadline is Friday

Deadline for nonprofit organizations to submit inquiries for consideration for grants from the Community Foundation is Friday, Aug. 18, reports foundation spokesperson Anne Digenis. Further information may be had by calling 694-2550 or going to the foundation website, www.cfsww.org.

Committee to help Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation
develop public involvement police formed; meets Aug. 21

A committee to assist the Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation Department develop a public involvement policy has been formed and will hold its initial public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in the conference room at 1101 Broadway.

Members of the committee are as follows: Debbie Abraham, Lisa Chabert, Wayne Clemetson, Charlie Gourde, Stacey Johnson, Glenn Lamb, Nikki Peterson, Jennifer Reed, Bud Van Cleve and Barbe West.
