Ara Serjoie joins Clark Foundation
as vice president of development

Veteran fundraiser Ara Serjoie has been appointed vice president of Development for the Clark College Foundation, one of the largest community college foundations in the world, with assets of over $63 million.

Serjoie last was director of development and alumni relations for the Girl Scouts of Utah. He had previously worked in various development functions at the University of Utah, Weber State University and Utah State University. During his tenure with the Girl Scouts, Serjoie increased support through annual giving activities by more than four-fold.

At the Clark College Foundation Serjoie will oversee all fundraising programs, including annual, major and planned giving. He will also supervise donor relations, alumni relations, the Penguin Athletic Club and the scholarship program.

U.S. Army allocates $26.8 million
for Camp Bonneville cleanup

An agreement by the U.S. Army to provide $26.8 million toward cleanup of Camp Bonneville, contingent on Clark County accepting transfer of the 3,800-acre former military camp for public uses, will be discussed by county commissioners during their regular 10 a.m. meeting, Tuesday, July 25.

The proposed Environmental Services Cooperative agreement commits the Army to funding environmental cleanup at the camp and establishes roles and responsibilities for the county and the Army for managing cleanup operations.

To receive the property, the county would sign a memorandum of agreement with the Army for property transfer, an agreement with a cleanup contractor, and final approval from Washington Governor Chris Gregoire.

The huge area north of Camas in east Clark County has long been sought as space for public activities, in particular a regional park, but fears of never being able to eradicate every unexploded ordnance have dampened local enthusiasm.

From 1909 through closure in 1995, the Army used Camp Bonneville as a training base, including firearm and artillery firing ranges. The base has documented soil and groundwater contamination in some areas, and the potential for unexploded ordnance such as artillery shells.

Baird Announces $2.7 million
HUD grants for Clark County

U.S. Rep Brian Baird (D-3rd) today announced that Clark County has received $2,768,412 in grants aimed at promoting economic self-sufficiency and expanding affordable housing options for low-income families and individuals. The grants were awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Clark County received $28,975 in American Dream Down Payment Initiative grants, $1,371,966 in Community Development Block Grants, and $1,367,471 in HOME grants.

The grants promote homeownership opportunities, by providing low-income households with down payment and closing cost assistance, and help local communities provide housing and suitable living environments for moderate-to low-income residents.
