Hot July Nights opens tomorrow in Esther Short Park

John Stamos appearing with
The Beach Boys Friday

Vancouver’s hottest music festival takes place in the coolest spot in town, Esther Short Park, Friday, July 14, and Saturday, July 15, according to Hot July Nights impresario KC Fuller.

Fuller is bringing in headliners The Beach Boys for an 8 p.m. performance Friday, and Kool & The Gang at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Performing with The Beach Boys is TV actor John Stamos, who, in addition to his acting and producing career, has appeared with the Beach Boys often over the past 20 years.

Stamos will be in the cast of ER as a series regular this fall. His career has spanned over 20 years. He started on the soap General Hospital debuted on Broadway in 1997 in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Friday night’s show opener is The Beatniks, who go on at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a beer-and-wine garden as well as a food pavilion. Concert-goers should bring low-back chairs and blankets.

Tickets at the gate are $30 on Friday, $25 on Sunday. For further information, call 750-8840.

Deadline for public comment on BIA
Cowlitz Casino Resort DEIS is Friday

The deadline for submitting comments on the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ draft Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Cowlitz Casino Resort between La Center and Ridgefield is Friday, July 14, and more local organizations are going public with their comments.

The draft document under scrutiny by the BIA suggests that the best use for the 152-acre site is a casino and commercial development, including tribal offices and a museum.

According to the La Center City council, which submitted a 28-page letter to the BIA, the DEIS contains “glaring inaccuracies.”

Clark County commissioners, who also released their comments on the DEIS, said that the Cowlitz Tribe's proposal for a large casino near La Center "does not serve the tribe's interests." The DEIS analysis is flawed and should be redone, commissioners said.

The Neighborhoods Association of Clark County is working on a letter stating that a primary concern is the impact of the development on the transportation system. The NACCC agreed at its July meeting that it was not taking a position on the proposed development.

The deadline to submit comments on the draft impact statement is 5 p.m. Friday, July 14. They are to be submitted to Mr. Stanley Speaks, Regional Director, Northwest Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, 911 NE 11th Avenue, Portland, OR 97232-4169.
