Governor to honor

Gov. Christine Gregoire will help present the top five construction projects awards of the year during the Vancouver Business Journal’s Top Project Event Thursday, July 21, in the Clark County Center for Community Health, which itself is one of the top 25 project of the year. The community health center, still under construction, is the largest building within the campus of the Veterans Administration complex near the main Fourth Plain Boulevard VA entrance. The early evening of hors d’oeuvres begins at 4:30 p.m. and concludes at 7 p.m. The governor is expected to speak about 5 p.m. Construction projects in Clark County currently employ about 5,200 workers and are valued at over $360 million, according to business journal publisher John McDonagh. commissioners again During their regularly scheduled meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, Clark County commissioners again will hear an appeal of a permit to allow J. L. Storedahl & Sons to continue mining gravel at their Daybreak site on East Fort of the Lewis River in northern Clark County. Twice the county hearings examiner has given the Cowlitz County company permission to go forward with gravel mining on the river, provided that the company provide environmental mitigations over the life of the mining operation. The permit approved by the hearings examiner allows expansion of existing surface mining onto 178 acres of an approximately 292-acre site. No public comment, oral or written, will be accepted during the public meeting. People Dick Carroll, Vancouver, has been appointed to the Clark County Railroad Advisory Board. Calendar The Vancouver City Council, during its workshop session at 4 p.m. today, will hear a report by Dane Anderson on how the creation of a youth-oriented retail, restaurant, and entertainment venue, including a teen entertainment center to be called The Spot, would fit with the city’s current urban economic growth planning. The plan was created by the Clark County Youth Commission. The city council also meets in regular session at 7 p.m. n The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District board meets in regular session at 6 p.m. this evening in Three Creeks Community Library, 800-C NE Tenny Road.
