Gov. Chris Gregoire
schedules Gov. Chris Gregoire has scheduled one in a series of town hall meetings across the state for Vancouver on Thursday, July 6, in Discovery Middle School, 800 E 40th Street. The governor says that she is interested in hearing from members of the public on issues that matter to them personally. The governor’s priority issues are as follows: education, health care, governmental accountability, environment, economic development and the budget. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.,and the session will begin at 7 p.m. Advanced registration is strongly advised. Responses may be sent by going to http://www.governor.wa.gov/regional/rsvp/register_vc.htm. National speakers headline Kurt Nagle, president and CEO of the American Association of Port Authorities, Alexandria, Va., and John Martin, president, Martin and Associates Economic Impact Research, Lancaster, Penn., are the featured speakers at the 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, quarterly meeting of the Columbia River Economic Development Council in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The speakers will discuss a report on the Port of Vancouver Economic Benefit Study and the regional outlook for the Vancouver-Portland maritime future. Reservations are required for the $30 luncheon. C-TRAN providing shuttle C-TRAN is again providing express shuttle service to the fireworks celebration at The National Historic Reserve on the Fourth of July. The service will be provided only from C-TRAN's Westfield/Vancouver Mall transit center. The cost to ride the round-trip shuttle is $1.00 per person or $3.00 for groups up to six riders, payable upon boarding at the Westfield/Vancouver Mall transit center. Payment is not needed when returning from the fireworks show. Children age six and under ride free. C-TRAN monthly passes and tickets will also be accepted. Shuttle service will be approximately every 10 minutes between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Return service to the mall will begin after the fireworks at approximately 10:30 p.m. No additional service to or from the National Historic Reserve will be provided. Leadership Nominations for the 18th annual General George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award are being sought, reports Dan Tonkovich, chairman of the Marshall Selection Committee. Nominees must be residents of Clark County, graduates with a four-year college degree, and 35 years of age or younger. The award is based on demonstrated leadership ability, commitment to public service, academic achievement, and a potential for ongoing leadership in the community. Nomination forms are available by going to www.vnhrt.org or by calling the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, 992-1801. People Scott Keeney, president & CEO of nLight, has been given the Pacific Northwest Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 Award in the technology category. Vancouver-based nLight produces the world’s leading high-power semiconductor lasers, according to Keeney. n Shasa Dobrow, Vancouver, earned her doctorate in organizational behavior at the Harvard Business School this month, has accepted a position as assistant professor at the Fordham University Business School. News brief Improvements on NE 117th Street, connecting Highway 99 and NE Hazel Dell Avenue, have been completed, the Clark County Public Works Department reports. The project has been under construction since May 2005. Improvements on the mile-long east-west arterial include a center turn line, bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
