hands on archaeology experience

Children between the ages of 8 and 12 are being offered hands-on archaeology experience through a series of daily Kids Digs at the National Park Service’s Fort Vancouver site beginning Saturday, July 1, according to NPS spokesperson Heidi Pierson.

Children will work as a team excavating boxes filled with soil layers and artifacts that reflect the typical Fort Vancouver archaeological site. They will also take notes and describe the artifacts they discover.

Supervised sessions are offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. No pre-registration is required, but each dig is limited to 20 persons. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the fort site at 9 a.m. each day.
