A memorial service for Clark County native David C. Hutchison, who died at the age of 82 on June 7, is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, in the Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. Mr. Hutchison, along with the late Don Blair, was a founding member in 1965 of the law firm Blair, Schaefer Hutchison and Wynne, which later became Blair, Schaefer, Hutchison and Wolfe. Mr. Hutchison had served as the Vancouver City Attorney from 1951 to 1955. Mr. Hutchison and his sister, Shirley Hutchison Ackley, were raised in Proebstel, where their parents ran the General Merchandise Store from 1919 to 1944. At the age of 12, when his father, Carl, because of a sudden illness, became unable to get groceries for the store, Mr. Hutchison successfully drove their Federal; truck across the Interstate Bridge, the Columbia Slough Bridge and the St. John’s Bridge to get supplies. Mr. Hutchison’s first job was shocking hay for 25 cents an hour. Mr. Hutchison was an honor student, president of the student body and graduate of Vancouver High School, where he also wrote for the school paper, represented Boys’ State and starred in the school play, Pride & Prejudice. Mr. Hutchison was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Washington State University. Mr. Hutchison served with the Allied occupation forces in Germany and Turkey after World War II. He earned his law degree from the University of Washington. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a colonel in 1970. Mr. Hutchison was extremely active in the community. Elected to the Vancouver School Board, he served as president of the board in 1971 and 1972. He was a chairman of the Vancouver Civil Service Commission, a president of the Wauna Lake Club and a charter member of the Vancouver Press Club. Mr. Hutchison also served on the board of the Girl Scouts and the Salvation Army. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Claire; a daughter, Ann K. Herr; two sons, Steven C. Hutchison and Robert D. Hitchison; and his sister, Shirley. There are eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Dean Sutherland, who says

Dean Sutherland, who six years ago was instrumental in creating Clark County’s Sammy Award program, was surprised Thursday when Clark County Commissioner Marc Boldt called the former state senator to the podium to receive his own Sammy during the annual Sammy presentation ceremony at the Water Resources Education Center. Sammy Award recipients are honored for their efforts to protect local habitat for salmon and steelhead. Sutherland, who is senior manager of Communications and Community Relations at Clark Public Utilities, was presented the Commissioners Sammy Award. “As a member of the Sammy selection committee, Dean Sutherland has helped recognize many deserving volunteers over the years now it is his turn to be honored,” Sutherland was told. Sutherland, who said he was “speechless,” managed to say: “I am lucky that the community has given me so many opportunities to get involved to help with environmental stewardship, as well as other things.” Other Sammy Award winners for 2006 are as follows: Ed McMillan, Tom and Kozue Monahan, Phil Burgess, Richard Dyrland and Charlotte Akin. over The 8th iteration of Vancouver’s Microblues Festival is from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan 17, in Esther Short Park and features nearly nonstop blues music from beginning to end. Food, beer, wine and souvenir vendors will be on hand. Low-back chairs will be permitted. Admission is $10. Children under 12 are free. Preceding the festival is a 9 to 11 a.m. conference and presentation in the Hilton Vancouver, Washington, in which keynote speaker Joe Morena, will discuss the healing power of the blues. Participants should bring resumes and be prepared to respond to interviewers. n Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center, 12208 SE Evergreen Highway, is celebrating the summer solstice from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17, with activities for young and old alike. The event is free, but there is a modest charge for lunch, if ordered.
