Christopher Lui earns
first MAP scholarship

Christopher Lui, Mountain View High School junior, has been awarded a Mentoring Advanced Placement program scholarship. The $1,500 scholarship is the first awarded by the MAP program started by Vancouver's nLight Corporation.

Lui is a member of the National Honor Society. He participated in the science Olympiad and was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2006 U.S. Physics Team. He placed first in the region in the 2005 Physics Bowl. Lui has taken 13 advanced placement classes and 10 honors courses.

The MAP program is a partnership among nLight and other local businesses, Educational Service District 112, Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council and local school districts. The program provides mentors, from businesses, to high school students pursuing advance placement coursework.

NLight manufactures high-powered semiconductor lasers.

Report suggests county Fire Marshal’s
Office should increase inspection fees

A recently completed Clark County performance audit of the county Fire Marshal’s Office reports that the county may want to adjust fees for fire inspections. The report, issued by county auditor Greg Kimsey, shows that the county general fund paid for 62 percent of the cost of annual fire inspections during 2005 at a cost to the general fund of $326,000.

The audit is part of an ongoing series of performance audits of local governmental agencies conducted by the county Auditor’s Office.

The report also recommended that the Fire Marshal’s Office should set up improved inspection schedules, utilize digital technology, analyze data to determine whether re-inspection fees would increase compliance, and analyze data to determine if more on-site follow-up is needed.

Kimsey said that the county Department of Community Development, which oversees the Fire Marshal’s Office, is already taking action to implement the recommendations.
