Committee to re-elect Greg Kimsey

Steve Stuart, although a Clark County commissioner for less than two years, is running for that partisan office for a second time, he will be announcing at a campaign kickoff event at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at Tommy O’s Restaurant, 801 Washington Street. Democrat Stuart was appointed to the three-member board of commissioners in December 2004, to fill the unexpired position held by Craig Pridemore, who successfully ran for state senate. In 2005 Stuart stood for election for the final year of Pridemore’s term and went on to beat former state representative Republican Tom Mielke in that race. This year Stuart is running for a full four-year term on the board. His competition this time is expected to be former Vancouver mayor Bruce Hagensen, who says he will be running for the position as a Republican. Candidates for local and state elections will officially file during the week of July 24. The primary election is Tuesday, Sept. 19. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 7. General, congressman, mayor The commander of the 104th Division, Maj. Gen. Terrill Moffett will be the principal speaker at the 11 a.m. Monday, May 29, observance of Memorial Day at the Vancouver Barracks Post Cemetery on Fourth Plain Boulevard. Also participating in the ceremony, that last year attracted over 300 persons, are U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd), and Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard. The public is advised to arrive early in order to find parking. ‘Hire-A-Vet’ job fair will
have Clark County’s largest employer, Southwest Washington Medical Center, as well as other major employers, who are seeking new employees, such as WaferTech, Home Depot, Safeway and the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center, are among 30 companies participating in the WorkSource Vancouver ‘Hire-a-Vet Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 17. Applicants are urged to bring copies of resumes and to be prepared to be interviewed for work, according to Beth Hammer, business liaison for WorkSource Vancouver. contestants Clark County Idol contestants, aged 8 to 18, will compete for trophies and CDs during the Clark County Idol competition, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in the Luekpe Community Center, 1009 E McLoughlin Boulevard. The competition is sponsored by Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation, City of Vancouver, Clark County Department of Community Services and the state Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Vendors are being sought for Vendors are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for the August 19-20 Uptown Village Festival, reports Uptown Village Association president Jenifer Petersen. The two-day festival, in its 13th year, attracted 70 vendors, 25 musical acts and an estimated 20,000 visitors. The festival is held on Main Street between McLoughlin and Fourth Plain Boulevards. Alice Cooper and .38 Special Alice Cooper and .38 Special are the first two acts selected for 2006’s ten-day Clark County Fair, Aug. 4 through 12, reports fair marketing manager Stephanie Firsch. General admission seating is free with admission to the fair, but reserved seats are available at an additional charge through Ticketmaster.com. People Darlene Downey, media specialist for Evergreen Schools Harmony Elementary School, has won the 2006 Altrusa International Library Service Award. Downey was presented a trophy, plaque and a check for $750 which she can spend as she wishes to improve the school library. Calendar Michael McCabe, acoustic finger-style guitarist, presents a solo concert at 7 p.m. this evening in Borders Books Music and Café, 811 SE 160th Avenue. For further information on the free concert, call 693-5402. n F-15 Eagle Jet fighter planes from the Oregon Air Guard 142nd fighter wing will fly over the Woodland Veterans Memorial at 11:09 a.m. Monday, May 29. The fighters will be flying at 350 miles an hour about 1,000 feet in the air. n Clark Pubic Utilities’ commissioners meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 30. n Clark County commissioners meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, and will discuss the county’s proposed Wetlands and Habitat Conservation Ordinances. n In observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, the Daily Insider will not be published.
