Vancouver pilot sets stage
for World War II celebration
Small
beginnings: Juan Brito, Vancouver, helps get audience enthused about World War
II celebration in August by bringing his Piper L-4”grasshopper” to Pearson Field
today. Mayor Royce Pollard, welcomes arrival of first of many vintage Air Force
plans to community
Juan
Brito, Vancouver, a 27-year-old pilot for Horizon Airlines, landed his
L-4 single-engine World War II vintage airplane at Pearson Field this afternoon,
taxied up to waiting local officials and was welcomed as having brought in the
first exhibit for the community’s 60th anniversary observance of the end of
World War II, which will be in August.
Vancouver’s three-day celebration,
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 26 through 28, is the largest of several
planned in the United States and Europe and is expected to attract hundreds of
thousands of people, according to Elson Strahan,
president of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, which is
coordinating the sanctioned event.
Brito, owner of the Piper L-4, which
during World War was called a grasshopper because of its ability to land and
take off under difficult conditions over rough terrain, flew it to Vancouver
last week from El Paso, Tex., where he keeps it in the winter. At speeds of 45
to 60 miles an hour, it took Brito five days to make the flight. He navigated by
compass and sight, just as Army Air Corps pilots had to do during World War II.
The L-4, used as a liaison plane
during the war, will be displayed at Pearson Field along with scores of other
vintage military aircraft during the celebration.
Other events in August include
dinners, dances and encampments.
