Clark County Fair
royalty named

2006 Clark County Fair court comprises Queen Courtney Ann Kalian, left, and Princesses Sarah Brown, center, and Bethany Butler, right. The annual county fair runs from Friday, Aug. 4, through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Courtney Ann Kalian, Clark College student and Skyview High School graduate, has been named queen of the Clark County Fair.

Serving with Kalian, to help promote the county fair are Sarah Brown, Ridgefield, a sophomore at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, and Bethany Butler, Hockinson High School sophomore.

Kalian, daughter of Rory and Carla Kalian, is active in the Hockinson E-Z Rider 4-H Club and the National Pinto Horse Association. Her horse is a breeding stock Paint named Heza Terrific.

Daughter of Jackie and  Kelly Brown, Sarah is  president of the Clover Crest Equestrian 4-H Club, barrel racing director of the Washington State High School Rodeo Association, and a member of the Clark County Saddle Club. Her horse is an American Quarter Horse, named JC.

Butler, daughter of Dee and Robert Butler, is vice president of the Range Riders Equestrian Team and a member of the Clark County State Equestrian Team. Her horse is a Quarter Horse named Ima Rosie Seeker.

State School Administrators honor contributors
to K-12 education in southern Washington

Washington Association of School Administrators' awards  have been presented to seven individuals and organizations for their contributions to K-12 education in southern Washington. Two special awards were additionally presented.as well as two additional special awards.

Earning recognition for exemplary contributions to education were the following:

Molly Coston and Phil Harris, for organizing the Washougal Schools Citizens for Better Schools Committee.

Hal Dengerink, chancellor of Washington State University Vancouver, for leadership in establishing significant community partnerships that have resulted in math and science education advances .

Walter Hansen, for  significant volunteer efforts in the La Center School District.

Tim Kopp, for exemplary service as a teacher in the Nqaselle Youth Camp School.

John and Andra Mobley, owners of A & J Select Market, for their support of school programs and events in the Stevenson-Carson School District.

The Camas Educational Foundation, for raising over $1 million since 1997, for financing academic enrichment programs.

The Ridgefield Police Department, for its School Resource Officer Program in the Ridgefield School District.

The Student Achievement Leadership award was presented to Tannis Knight, Camas School District assistant school superintendent,  for implementing successful high student achievement programs in the District.

The Award of Merit, as well as a retirement award, was presented to Washougal School District Superintendent Bob Donaldson for uniting the school district and parents on a successful results-oriented program during the past eight years. Donaldson is retiring after 35 years in education.

 Former tobacco industry executive, whose whistle blowing led to motion picture The Insider speaks at Clark College

 Jeffrey Wigand, former tobacco industry executive whose whistle-blowing on the industry's health and safety practices became the basis for the character played by Russell Crowe in the movie The Insider, will speak at Clark College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in Foster Hall.

There is no admission charge.
