Home & Garden Idea Fair draws
largest plant sale in the region

The largest plant sale in the Vancouver Portland metropolitan area is one of the main draws of the annual Home & Garden Idea Fair presented by Clark Public Utilities at the county fairgrounds this weekend.

In addition to the huge plant sale, scores of vendors have displays along the midway and in the giant Exposition Hall. Other activities include workshops and presentations from such names in the gardening world as Ed Hume, Dulcy Mahar, and Robb Rosser. Environmental and energy-savings exhibits and workshops abound.

Admission is free, but parking is $5 per vehicle. Free bus service is provided from both C-TRAN’s Salmon Creek Park and Ride and the Westfield Vancouver Mall transit station. It is suggested that fairgoers may want to contribute canned food goods for area food banks or make a monetary contribution to the utility’s Operation Warm Heart, which helps subsidize electric bills for low-income customers.

The fair is open until 8 p.m. this evening and between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 29, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 30.

Four posters from nearly 1,000
entries selected for billboards

Four Clark County student’s posters have been selected for outdoor billboard advertising this summer as part of the county Public Works Clean Water Program.

The winning art work will be previewed at 4 p.m. Monday, May 1, in the 6th floor hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street. The billboard advertising program begins May 15 and lasts most of the summer.

The poster winners are as follows: Ryan Bittner, kindergartner, Felida Elementary School; Carly Marshall, 4th grader at the Helen Baller Elementary School; Olga Pilipchuk, 7th grader, Lewisville Middle School; and  Zachary Thompson, 10th grader, Homelink School.

The annual contest attracted 983 entries.

Farmers Market chef’s demos
open with Nathan Read Saturday

In what will become a regular Saturday feature at the downtown outdoor Vancouver Farmers Market, Nathan Read, chef at the Gray’s At the Park Bistro & Bar in the Hilton Vancouver Washington will demonstrate the use of local food products in cooking from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

Read’s demonstrations will be in the Rose Garden Area in Esther Short Park, adjacent to the Farmers Market each Saturday Through May 20.

Read is known for buying and preparing produce, meat, fish, cheese, wine and bread from local farmers and producers. “The flavor, freshness and crispness of local foods are unbeatable,” Read says.

Vancouver’s outdoor Farmers Market is open on Saturday and Sundays through October. The adjacent indoor Farmers Market is open seven days a week.
