Dennis Cole, a former director of the state Employment Security Department, has been appointed executive director of the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington. Cole, a thirty-year resident of Clark County, is an ordained minister and serves at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Cole graduated from the Willamette University and earned his masters of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School. He has been executive director of the Human Services Council for the past three years, having been a senior development specialist with Legacy Health System, and he has served as president of Worksystems Inc., formerly the Private Industry Council. The Free Clinic provides free health care for children and adults who are otherwise unable to access those services. Located in the Jim Parsley Center, 4100 Plomondon Street, the Free Clinic is expanding its physical space. Library Ten finalists for the 2006 Altrusa Library Service Award have been announced by Altrusa International of Clark County. The award will be presented during an awards dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, in Royal Oaks Country Club, 8917 NE Fourth Plain Boulevard, Selected from among more than 50 libraries in Clark County, the finalists are as follows: Kathy Cramer, Sacajawea Elementary School; Karen Diller, Washington State University Vancouver Library; Darlene Downey, Harmony Elementary School; Ryan Ellis, Cascade Park Community Library; Rosemary Knapp, Camas High School; Amy Lee, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District; Debbie Leifsen, Jemtegaard Middle School; Jackie Little, Clark County Bookmobile, Vancouver Community Library; Jackie Spurlock, Battle Ground Community Library; and Teresa Torres, Cascade Park Community Library. Award-winning author Jack Gantos will be the keynote speaker. Gantos has won the Newberry Honor Book Award and the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Award. He was a 1998 National Book Award finalist. He is the author of Hole in My Life, for young adults, and the Joey Pigza books for children. Gantos will conduct a workshop from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. He will sign copies of his books during an author’s reception between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. The dinner is $35. Vancouver Although operational since January, the official grand opening of the Clark Center on the Washington State University Vancouver Salmon Creek campus is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2. The center represents an unprecedented partnership between WSU Vancouver and Clark College. The center is the home of Clark College,s nursing program as well as a variety of general education classes, including science and mathematics. In addition to classrooms, the 63,334 square-foot, three-story building houses science and computer laboratories and support space. WSU Vancouver and Clark are partners in a co-admissions agreement under which students can gain admittance to both institutions as the same time and transfer seamlessly from Clark to WSU Vancouver.
