Nez Perce memorial ceremony returns
to Vancouver Barracks Saturday

                 Horace Axtell Nez Perce elder

As they have done in Vancouver every year since 1998, members of the Nez Perce Tribe will gather for a moving three-hour-long memorial ceremony for Chief Redheart’s band, which was captured by Gen. O. O. Howard in 1887, and held in a stockade at Vancouver Barracks until April 22, 1878.

The public ceremony is outdoors at the site of the original stockade where 33 members of the band were held, without being changed, over the winter, during which time a baby among the band died. The site is just north of the restored Fort Vancouver on E 5th Street.

The event honors the memory of Nez Perce ancestors and pays tribute to tribal principles. During the Indian War of 1877, while the U.S. Army was attempting to remove Nez Perce tribal members from their ancestral lands to a new reservation, Chief Redhart’s band was captured and interned even though Chief Redheart’s band neither fought in the Indian War nor committed any crimes.

All military veterans are invited to join in the traditional pipe smoking circle that occurs near the end of the ceremony. The riderless horse (empty saddle) ceremony is perhaps the most moving part of event, which also includes dancing, singing and speeches.

Following the ceremony a traditional Native American meal, prepared by the Northwest Indian Veterans Association will be served in the auditorium in the barracks for the Nez Perce tribe and guests.

For further information, call mayor Royce Pollard’s office, 696-8211.
