Bravo! Vancouver adds ballet
to musical story of Paul’s conversion

To the music of Felix Mendelsson’s St. Paul Oratorio, based on the story of Paul’s conversion to Christianity, Bravo! Vancouver has added 18 ballet dancers and the Washington Chamber Orchestra for a one-of-a-kind performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S. Andresen Boulevard. Music director Maria Manzo will conduct the Bravo Chorale.

Known for expanding his audiences’ appetite for musical adventure, Bravo! Vancouver artistic director Michael Kissenger for the first time augments the Bravo! Chorale with members of the Washington State Ballet and the state chamber orchestra.

The Mendelssohn piece is seldom performed and likely will never again be performed the way it will be Sunday. Tickets are $15 at the door, and $15 plus costs through TicketsWest. For more information, go to www.bravoconcerts.com.

Former attorney general to discuss
national security and civil liberties

Former U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft will discuss “National Security and Civil Liberties in the 21st Century” at a Washington State University Vancouver Public Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th Street.

Preceding the lecture, a free symposium on the subject will be presented by Washington’s former U.S. senator Slade Gorton. The symposium will be at 1 p.m. in room 110 in the WSU Vancouver Student Services Building.

Battle Ground schools trying again
to get school bonds passed

The Battle Ground School District will be asking voters a second time to approve bonds for school construction at a special election, Tuesday, May 16. The Ridgefield School District will also be asking voters to approve school financing, and Clark County Fire District 1 will be asking voters to approve a special levy.

Deadline to register to vote by mail is Saturday, April 15. Deadline to register in person at the county Elections Department, 1408 Franklin Street, is Friday, April 28.

Family walkers to get perks

Participants in the Clark County Health Department’s first Public Health Family Walk, on the Washington State University Vancouver campus tomorrow, will receive free snacks and will be entered in a drawing for other free gifts. In addition, the first 100 participants to sign up for the walk will be given walking packs, which include copies of the new Clark County Walkaround Guide.

Registration will be near the Green parking lot beginning at 10 a.m. The walk is about a mile. For further information, call 903-2309.

Long-time volunteer Bill Renfroe and Vancouver dentist Peter Lubisich, have been appointed to the board of directors of the Free Clinic. Renfroe is with Kennedy Jenks Consultants. Lubisich is a former member of the SW Free Clinic of Portland.

Clark County political party conventions are tomorrow. Only delegates vote, but all party members are invited to attend. Republicans will nominate political candidates, although state law allows any qualified voter to file for partisan public office. Democrats will not nominate candidates. Both parties will select delegates to larger jurisdictional party conventions. Conventions open at 8 a.m. The Democrats meet in Fort Vancouver High School, 5700 E. 18th Street. Republicans meet in Prairie High School, 11500 NE 112th Avenue. n State Rep. Deb Wallace is holding a town hall meeting at 1 p.m. tomorrow, in the Firstenburg Community Center, 700 NE 136th Avenue. n The Xstream Poets’ Society meets at 11 a.m. tomorrow, in the Washougal Community Library, 1661 C Street. n The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Salvador Brotons, presents its Young Artist program at 3 p.m. tomorrow and 7 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in the concert hall at Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th Street. Mountain View High School 9th grader Quinn Middleman is an oboe soloist. A discussion of the musical program begins one hour before each concert. Tickets are $5 for students, $20 for seniors, $25 for general admission and $35 for reserved seating.
