If nothing else tomorrow, go
for the
Walkaround Guide

An early spring walk along the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail in Vancouver is just what the doctor ordered. This trail is one of nearly two-dozen featured in the
Clark County Walkaround Guide.
Two hundred commemorative first-edition guides will be given away during the program that introduces the community trail and bikeway system at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Vancouver Landing Amphitheater.

Direct your feet to the Vancouver Landing amphitheater just west of the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay for the 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, unveiling of the Clark County Trail and Bikeway Systems Plan.

Commemorative first-edition copies of the Clark County Walkaround Guide that will be given to the first 200 persons will make attending the ceremonies worthwhile.

But, there is more, of course. The program tomorrow is one of the most visible efforts by Community Choices 2010, where the real focus is on the health of the Clark County community.

“The trails plan is one piece of the community’s effort to makes physical activity an easy choice toward a healthier community,” says Barbe West, executive director of Community Choices 2010

Because the event coincides with the last day, 200 years ago, that explorers Lewis and Clark spent in Clark County, Lewis and Clark re-enactors will entertain and inform tomorrow. Also informing, in addition to West, will be Phil Wu, Kaiser Permanente, Ron Arp, Nautilus Inc., John Deeder, superintendent of Evergreen Public Schools, and John Weisman, Clark County Health Department director.

The 28-page spiral-bound guide scenically pictures ten of “the great walks in our community,” as well as provides statistics and photos of 25 trails in Clark County, including two that are indoors. The nearly weatherproof booklet, suitable for accompanying trail users, was produced and funded by Community Choices 2010 and Kaiser Permanente for the Vancouver/Parks & Recreation Department. For further information, go to www.stepstoahealthierclarkco.org.

The Lewis and Clark “Journey Home” luncheon sponsored by the Vancouver/Clark County Bicentennial Committee and the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, follows at noon in the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay. Bob Archibald, Lewis and Clark expert and president of the Missouri Historical Society. Is the speaker. Tickets are $30 and available by calling 694-2588, or by going to www.vancouverusa.com.

Corps of Engineers to study
Vancouver Lake problems

The Portland Corps of Engineers has been authorized to study the feasibility of providing erosion control and ecosystem restoration in the Vancouver Lake watershed, U.S. Rep. Brian Baird announced today.

Baird, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said he secured authorization through a committee resolution, which does not need Senate approval.

The Vancouver Lake Watershed Partnership will coordinate all development and conservation in the area, according to Baird.

Party conventions are Saturday

Clark County’s Republican and Democratic Party conventions are both Saturday, April 8.

The Republicans convention opens at 8 a.m. in Prairie High School, 11500 NE 112th Avenue.

Diane Tebelius, state GOP Party Chair will give the Keynote address. Caucuses convene at 11:30 a.m. to nominate legislative and county commissioner, District 3 candidates. For further information, call Mike Gaston, 574-0984.

Registration for the Democratic Convention opens at 8 a.m. in Fort Vancouver High School, 5700 E. 18th Street. The convention convenes at 9 a.m. While all Democrats may attend the convention, only the 288 delegates selected by precinct caucuses March 4, are eligible to vote, according to credentials chairman Norm Banks.
