Port of Vancouver imports the
fertilizer that grows the crops

Last year the Port of Vancouver was the principal port for importing fertilizer for northwest farm crops, reports Nancy Baker, president of the Port of Vancouver board. Across Vancouver’s docks, 67,000 tons of fertilizer were delivered from the world’s largest supplier of mineral fertilizer, Yara International, headquartered in Norway.

Star Shipping delivered the fertilizer in ships originating as far north as Glomfjord, Norway, near the Arctic Circle and which crossed the Atlantic Ocean before going through the Panama Canal and on to the Columbia River.

More than $3 billion’s worth of the state’s top crops were grown with fertilizer imported from Norway, Baker said.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Washington’s top crops are as follows: Apples, $1.155 billion; wheat, $521.2 million; potatoes, $489 million; nursery and greenhouse products, $313 million; and cherries, $175.7 million.

Farm production amounts to 13 percent of the state’s economy and provides jobs for 160,000 Washingtonians, Baker said.
