Take a fresh look at Lewis & Clark

Clark College will conclude its Lewis and Clark lecture series by welcoming Dr. Gary E. Moulton on March 29.  Moulton is the Thomas C. Sorensen Professor of History at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and has served as editor of the Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  He will speak at Clark College’s Gaiser Hall at 7 p.m.  The presentation, “Lewis and Clark’s New Look,” is free and open to the public.

Moulton’s lecture is sponsored by Clark College, the Lewis and Clark Committee of Vancouver/Clark County, National Park Service Lewis and Clark Trail, the City of Vancouver, and Clark County.

As part of its Lewis and Clark lecture series, Clark College welcomed award-winning writer and documentary filmmaker Dayton Duncan in 2004 and Amy Mossett, the nation’s foremost Sacagawea impressionist, in 2005.

Gaiser Hall is located on the northwest corner of Clark College’s main campus on Fort Vancouver Way, between McLoughlin Blvd. and Fourth Plain Blvd.  For more information about Moulton’s presentation, call 360-906-7119.

Springy Yamasaki honored with national award

Camas’ Skyridge Middle School assistant principal Springy Yamasaki was named 2006 National Assistant Principal of the Year.

"There are just so many good things to say about Springy," said Skyridge Principal Ray Bell. "She is instrumental in finding innovative approaches to raising student achievement. She is open to change and works well with teams. She is a good problem-solver who doesn't let  road blocks get in her way," he added.

Each of the 52 assistant principals from 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the Department of Defense who vied for the honor that Yamasaki won, will be honored at a black-tie gala in Arlington, Virginia at the end of April.

As the finalist, Yamasaki will be awarded $5,000.00 to be used for her own professional development and/or a school project.

SWMC Awards $100,000 to Free Clinic

Southwest Washington Medical Center (SWMC)  has awarded a $100,000 grant to benefit the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington.

The Free Clinic is the only free, walk-in urgency medical care resource in Southwest Washington. Funds from SWMC will help provide urgent medical care and preventive care to about 12,000 people with no other access to health care services. These include immunizations, prescriptions, dental service and vision exams. The Free Clinic of SW Washington provides basic health care services for children and adults with no or low income who do not have health insurance or state medical assistance. Founded in 1990 under the leadership of Dr. Sam Beall, the clinic operates through the generosity of hundreds of volunteer medical professionals who donate their time and talents to serve others in need. The Clinic, which serves thousands of uninsured children and adults each year, is located at the Jim Parsley Center, 4100 Plomondon Street in Vancouver.

SWMC also recently presented grants to The Wellness Project/Community Services Northwest, Clark County Skills Center, and The American Trauma Society, Washington Division. The grants program is managed through the SWMC Foundation. Last year the SWMC Foundation approved about $200,000 in grants awarded to various social agencies.

County to unveil bike/trails plan

Get ready to ride. . .and walk around Clark County.

The Clark County Commissioners will adopt a Lewis and Clark Legacy Project, Clark County Trail and Bikeway Systems Plan in a signing ceremony April 6, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Port of Vancouver’s Public Dock next to the Red Lion Inn at the Quay. The date has historic significance in the context of the region’s trail system: it was April 6, 1806 that Lewis and Clark made their final departure from Clark County.

In conjunction with the historically significant presentation, Community Choices 2010 will introduce the new Clark County Walkaround Guide, a friendly portable publication that features maps and information on walking and biking 25 Clark County trails. The Walkaround Guide was produced by Community Choices 2010’s Steps to a Healthier Clark County grant and funded by Kaiser Permanente. Two hundred commemorative first

edition Walkaround Guide books will be given away at the event.

“The Trails Plan is one piece of the community’s efforts to set a framework that supports an environment that assures the healthy choice is the easy choice when it comes to access to physical activity,” says Kelly Punteney, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Trails Planner.

The Lewis and Clark “Journey Home” luncheon sponsored by Vancouver/Clark County Bicentennial Committee and the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce  will directly follow at noon at the Red Lion Inn at the Quay, with Bob Archibald, a Lewis and Clark expert from the Missouri Historical Society as guest speaker. To register or for more information about the luncheon go the Chamber’s website at http://www.vancouverusa.com/ or call the events line at 360-694-2588.
