BPA administrator Steve Wright hams it up for camera after he and Clark Public Utilities’ commissioners, Byron Hanke, far left, Nancy Barnes, and Carol Curtis, far right, sign mutually beneficial power sales deal. Bonneville Power Administration administrator Steve Wright came to Vancouver this morning to sign a contract with Clark Public Utilities that puts money in both of their pockets. The Clark County electric utility’s total benefit is about $15 million, the result of the utility’s applying for and being awarded residential and farm subsidies ordinarily allowed only customers of investor-owned private electric utilities. In exchange, Clark and BPA signed an agreement that gives Clark more energy during the summer and less in the winter, which it will augment with electricity from its Lower River Road generating plant. This arrangement gives BPA more power to sell during the winter. Over the course of the new four-year agreement, BPA expects to earn an additional $11 million in power sales. Wright said of the agreement: “Clark Public Utilities’ statesmanlike approach to resolving this issue has been exemplary. I greatly appreciate Clark’s efforts to be a constructive participant in our Northwest electricity community.” John Deeder named
superintendent
John Deeder, interim superintendent at Evergreen Public Schools since the resignation last month of Bob Corley, yesterday was appointed by the school district’s board as superintendent of the largest school district in Clark County. “John is well qualified to step in and lead the district,” says school board president Joan Skelton. “His leadership, style and passion will keep the district focused on the work of student engagement. He has the full confidence of the entire board. He is a well known and respected educator, and we look forward to working with him.” Corley, who was recruited from a Florida school district a year ago, resigned in February. Deeder, who gained unanimous approval of the school board, also is reported to have had support of faculty and staff. Deeder has served Evergreen schools as an assistant superintendent, chief academic officer and, since last July, deputy superintendent. Prior to coming to Evergreen in 2002 as director of curriculum and instruction, Deeder was assistant superintendent in the Reynolds School District in Fairview. A former high school guidance counselor, administrative assistant, coach and teacher, and assistant principal, Deeder has worked in school districts in Oregon and California. In addition to working with public schools, Deeder has done private consulting, including work for the Northwest Regional Laboratory as an “Onward to Excellence Trainer” and as an adjunct professor of instructional theory at Portland State University. A graduate of the University of Idaho, Deeder earned a masters degree from Lewis and Clark College. After volunteering for 41
