Elson Strahan received $40,000 educational grant from First Lady Laura Bush, left, on Capitol Hill last week. With Strahan and Bush is former Interior Secretary, Gale Norton A $40,000 educational grant for the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust was presented to trust president Elson Strahan by First Lady Laura Bush in Washington last week. Bush is the honorary chairwoman of Preserve America, a White House initiative that recognizes communities that have made commitments to historic preservation and related education programs. Strahan said that the Preserve America program recognized Vancouver for its commitment to historic preservation and related education programs. He added, “The funding will enable us to secure the expertise to review and revise K-12 curriculum to ensure that our educational programming at Fort Vancouver, Pearson Air Museum and the Water Resources Education Center is consistent with both Washington and Oregon standards.” According to Tracy Fortmann, superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site: “We have well over 30,000 students who come to the historic reserve each year. This grant will help launch our new education plan. We will bring more life to the Historic Reserve’s rich legacy.” Noted conductor Peter
Boonshaft Peter Boonshaft, professor of music and director of bands at Hofstra University, who has performed for President George W. Bush and former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, will conduct at Mountain View High School at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16. Boonshaft will conduct Mountain View’s 9th grade Thunder Band, 10th grade concert band and 11th-12th-grade wind symphony. The concert in Mountain View High School, 1500 SE Blairmont Drive, is open to the public, and there is no charge for admission. Vancouver Farmers Market opens Saturday The Vancouver Farmers Market opens its 17th season at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 18, on Esther Street, between 6th and 8th Streets, just west of Esther Short Park. The open air market is open on weekends through October, closing at 3 p.m. It is adjacent to the year-round indoor market. Parking is available at the Vancouvercenter for 50 cents an hour. People St. Joseph Catholic School girls, Jewell Armstrong, Beth Biggs, Monica Bottleberghe, Molly Brown, Ari Busch, Nina Duerk, Hannah Hendrickson, Mary Leighton, Stephanie McDonagh, Christine Miller, Colleen Murphy, Rachael Oester, Hailey Reynolds and Vi Tran, coached by Steve McDonagh and Arch Miller, won the fourth grade girls’ basketball CYO City Championship, which includes the entire Portland Diocese and Clark County. News brief Deadline for nominations to be submitted for Library Service Awards, sponsored by Altrusa International, is 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 15. The 2005 winner was Heather Rhone, early learning project coordinator for the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.
