Elson Strahan presented education
grant by First Lady Laura Bush

Elson Strahan received $40,000 educational grant from First Lady Laura Bush, left, on Capitol Hill last week. With Strahan and Bush is former Interior Secretary, Gale Norton

A $40,000 educational grant for the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust was presented to trust president Elson Strahan by First Lady Laura Bush in Washington last week.

Bush is the honorary chairwoman of Preserve America, a White House initiative that recognizes communities that have made commitments to historic preservation and related education programs.

Strahan said that the Preserve America program recognized Vancouver for its commitment to historic preservation and related education programs. He added, “The funding will enable us to secure the expertise to review and revise K-12 curriculum to ensure that our educational programming at Fort Vancouver, Pearson Air Museum and the Water Resources Education Center is consistent with both Washington and Oregon standards.”

According to Tracy Fortmann, superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site: “We have well over 30,000 students who come to the historic reserve each year. This grant will help launch our new education plan. We will bring more life to the Historic Reserve’s rich legacy.”
