Vancouver-Portland area traffic cameras

Machining and welding competition
at Clark College open to the public

Regional welding competition at Clark College, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and concludes in mid-afternoon, is open to the public. There is no admission fee.

For the 29th consecutive year the Clark College Machining and Welding Technology Program is the host for regional high school machining and welding contests. Saturday’s winners will advance to state contests in the Tacoma Dome later in the year.

The competition is being held in buildings AA5 109 and AA2 101 on the college campus at 1800 E McLoughlin Boulevard.

Share schedules second annual
Mardi Gras Gala & Casino Night

Share, which last year raised $75,000 for care of the homeless and hungry in the greater Vancouver area with its first Mardi Gras Gala & Casino Night, is repeating the function at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

The $75-per-person event offers food, wine, casino-style gaming and prizes, and a silent auction. A portion of the proceeds this year will be used to assist victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who are currently living in Clark County, reports Share executive director Diane Christie.

Founded in 1977, Share helps care for the homeless and hungry. Last year, 3,868 people, were helped, of whom 473 were children. Share operates four shelters for the homeless, a transitional housing program and case management programs, and provides daily meals. For further information on Share, go to www.sharevancouver.org.

Sheriff’s Academy is free

Applications to participate in the 11-week Clark County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Academy are being accepted through Monday, Feb. 13, reports academy spokesperson Kari Schultz. There is no charge for the academy, which meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday between Thursday, Feb. 23, and Thursday, May 4.

The academy provides participants with a general overview of the major functions of the county sheriff’s department, as well as of the local law and the justice system.

The academy is limited to 25 people. Applicants are subject to a criminal history check. For further information, call 397-2244, or go to www.clark.wa.gov/sheriff/inter.
