FRIDAY FEB. 3, 2006 Voters getting serious about school issues The Clark County Elections Department is expecting a 40 percent turnout of voters by the time voting ends at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Of some 170,000 registered voters, 59,000 had returned ballots by this afternoon in the all-mail election that involves special levies in separate school districts in the county. To be counted, ballots must be postmarked by before 8 p.m. next Tuesday. Ballots also may be taken to the Elections Department or deposited in the drive-up ballot box on 14th Street between Franklin and Esther Streets prior to 8 p.m. Cheri Cole gets Rising Star Award Cheri Cole, Clark College director of Alumni Relations and the Penguin Athletic Club, has been selected to receive the Rising Star Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The Rising Star Award honors professionals with three to five years’ experience and recognizes their achievements. CASE is an international organization supporting educational advancement. Cole will accept the award during the District VIII CASE Conference in Vancouver, B.C., later this month. C-TRAN to provide free bus
service to casino C-TRAN will be providing residents of La Center and Ridgefield free bus service to and from two public meetings scheduled by the U.S. Department of the Interior on the status of the proposed Cowlitz Casino Resort, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Prairie High School, and 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Fort Vancouver High School Auditorium. Passengers are asked to reserve space on buses by calling 263-6852. Cost of the free transportation is being paid for through C-TRAN advertising revenue. People Cheree Nygard has joined her husband, Andy Nygard, as a licensed representative with Edward Jones. The pair will work from the downtown Edward Jones location at 404 E. 15 Street, Suite #4. The Nygard family has been serving clients in Clark County since 1993. n Vaughn Lein is retiring from the Clark County Planning Commission after serving 23 years. In addition to Lein, ten-year veteran of the commission Carey Smith is also retiring. “Vaughn’s leadership as a chairman and Carey’s input have been invaluable. They have served as major force in shaping Clark County’s future,” said county board of commissioners chairman Marc Boldt.
