2006 Women of Achievement

Clark College and the YWCA Clark County today announced eight Women of Achievement, each of whom has contributed to a "stronger, healthier and more vibrant community."

To be honored with a reception and luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington are Jan Asai, Judi Brenes, Jeanne Kojis, Elise Menashe, Ginger Metcalf, Donna Roberge, Peggy Sheehan and Jan Truttman. Admission to the luncheon is $30; $25 for students and seniors. To make reservations, call 906-9129.

Asai is co-founder and volunteer executive director of the Columbia Dance Ensemble. She is also a member of the SWIFT board, Vancouver Lodging and Tax Advisory Commission and the Vancouver School District Magnet Program Planning Team.

Brenes helped establish the Wellness Center. Currently a member of the Southwest Washington Medical Center board of trustees, Brenes has served on the board of directors of the YWCA and the Kaiser Permanente Member Advisory board.

Kojis, a founding member of the Evergreen School District Foundation, also co-created the  Nonprofit Network of Southwest Washington and helped organize the downtown Devine Consign Store.

 Menashe is executive director of the Boys and Girls' Club. She is a member of the Evergreen School District Foundation board and has served on the board of Community Choices 2010.

Metcalf is executive director of Identity Clark County. She has helped raise millions of dollars for community projects and programs.

A long-time educator, Roberge is a mentor for the I Have a Dream Foundation and has served as a member of the YWCA board of directors.

Sheehan, a former business director for Columbia River Mental Health Services in Oregon, volunteers for the SHARE board, Memorial Hospital West Side Advisory Committee and the Veteran's Resource Committee.

Truttman, a former elementary school teacher, has served as a Red Cross volunteer, traveling on behalf of the Red Cross to New York after 9/11 and to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. She has served as president of the League of Women Voters of Clark County and president of International Training and Communication, Battle Ground.

Also to be honored at the 22nd Women of Achievement reception is Megan Bower, Camas High School, selected as the 2006 Young Woman of Achievement.

Bower has been cited for her humanitarian work on behalf of the homeless. Bower also received a $1,000 scholarship from the Donna Roberge Young Women of Achievement Scholarship Fund.

Runners-up for the Young Woman of Achievement Award are as follows: Thea Baker and Miriam Hacker, both of Battle Ground High School; Natalie Grattan, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics; Erin Hall, Heritage High School; Elizabeth Moreno, Ridgefield High School; Alisha Pedron, Columbia River High School; and Rebecca Tortorello, Skyview High School.

The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office is accepting applications from retailers interested in applying for any available fireworks permits that may be decided by a lottery in February. Fireworks cannot be sold in the county without a permit and only a limited number are available each year. Fireworks lottery application forms can be obtained at the Fire Marshal’s Office, 505 NW 179th Street, Ridgefield, or on the Clark County Web site at www.clark.wa.gov/commdev/firemarshal/fireservices.
All lottery applications must be received in the Fire Marshal’s Office no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31.

 The Clark College Jazz Festival continues today and this evening and all day Saturday, Jan. 28, in Gaiser Hall. Daily admission is $5. Noted jazz saxophonist John Handy in featured in the final concert of the festival at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, in Gaiser Hall. General admission is $15; students, $10. n Taiwanese students visiting Evergreen Public Schools this week will perform in a celebration of the Chinese New Year at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in Cascade Middle School, 13900 NE 18th Street. There is no charge for the event, which also includes demonstrations of fan dancing, martial arts and Chinese yo-yo. n The Portland International Auto Show in the Oregon Convention Center continues through Sunday evening, Jan. 29.
