Prior learning assessment credits may
shorten class time for bachelor degrees

Marylhurst University and Clark College have teamed up to provide prior learning and testing credits for students bound for bachelors degrees through the Clark-Marylhurst co-admissions program.

By taking into consideration skills learned through life experiences, students may be eligible for as many as 90 college credits. According to Clark’s acting vice president of instruction, prior learning may significantly reduce the cost and length of time it takes for a Clark student to move on to earn a bachelors degree at Marylhurst University.

“Knowledge is gained in may ways besides taking formal courses,” according to Melanie Booth, director of Marylhurst’s Learning Assessment Center. “Corporate training, on-the-job experience, community service, parenting, military training, seminars, workshops, volunteer activities and independent research are examples of what can be considered for undergraduate credit.”

Clark and Marylhurst are offering a free prior learning assessment information session at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Clark College Penguin Student Union Building. For further information and registration, call (800) 634-9982, extension 6260.

The commission makes recommendations to the commissioners about services, policies, and funding related to how the county meets federal and state requirements for water quality, including stormwater management.
