Anti-Iraq War group holding
public forum Saturday

A group of local activists opposing the Iraq War and advocating troop withdrawal are holding an “Out of Iraq Public Forum” from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, in Library Hall at the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard.

The forum, to which the public is invited, is co-sponsored by Vancouver For Peace, and by Democracy for Vancouver.

Speakers are Tom Hastings, director, Peace & Nonviolence Studies track, Portland State University; Laurie Mercier, associate professor of History, Washington State University Vancouver; Kelly Campbell, Portland area peace director, American Friends Service Committee’s Portland office; Paul Thiers, assistant professor of Political Science, WSU Vancouver: and Bob Goss, member of Veterans for Peace, chapter 72.

Vancouver for Peace, according to spokesperson, Mike Ellison, “is a group of citizens of Clark County working together for the dream of peace and justice for all.”

Democracy for Vancouver, according to spokesperson John Howes, “is a Washington State political action committee that supports fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates and elected officials.”

Vancouver School District, ESD 112 earn top national
award for statewide Russian language DVD project

A six-DVD set produced in Russian to help bridge the language and cultural barriers within the Vancouver School District, and now being distributed to the Russian and Ukraine populations statewide, has won a national The Communicator Awards Crystal Award of Excellence for American Schools of the 21st Century.

The entirely Russian language video, designed to help prepare Russian students for American public schools, was produced by Rose Yandell and Mikhail Oparin, of Educational Service District 112, and coordinated by Doug Goodlet, Brian Luderman and Lilly Boulianne, all of the Vancouver School District.

More than 3,000 schools presented entries to The Communicator Awards last year.

Court mysteries to be unveiled

Clark County District Court judges next month are offering two free programs designed to help increase public understanding of the courts in its jurisdiction, reports District Court presiding judge Darvin Zimmerman.

The first session at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the main hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street, will present information on three courts. District Court Judge John Hagensen will discuss the small claims court. A presentation on the domestic violence court will be offered by Judge James Swanger. Kelli Osler, District Court commissioner, will discuss traffic court.

The second session at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the same location will offer an explanation of domestic court by Judge Vern Schreiber. Judge Kenneth Eiesland will discuss the mental health court, and Judge Rich Melnick will discuss the substance abuse court. Zimmerman, who will moderate both sessions, will explain the homeless court.
