president to celebrate
Educator and author Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, will help celebrate the life and dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in Gaiser Hall at Clark College. The celebration, which is free and to which the public is invited, will also include presentations by the Multicultural Students United Club of Clark College and Minorities Reconstructing Culture of Washington State University Vancouver. A performance by the Community A.M.E. Zion Church choir is also part of the program. Hrabowski was prominently featured in a 1997 Spike Lee documentary, Four Little Girls, depicting the racially motivated bombing in 1963 of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Hrabowski co-authored two books, Beating the Odds and Overcoming the Odds, focusing on parenting and high-achieving African males and females in science. Hrabowski is a consultant to the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and Universities. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and is a recipient of the McGraw Prize in Education and the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. After gradating from Hampton Institute at the age of 19, Hrabowski earned a masters degree in mathematics and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. State-of-City address February 1 Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard presents the 2006 State-of-the-City address Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. physical Physical inspections of property in rural areas around the cities of Amboy, Yacolt, Battle Ground, Camas and Washougal will be conducted by the Clark County Department of Assessment and GIS beginning this month and continuing through May. Physical inspections include an exterior observation of properties to determine whether there have been changes in characteristics that affect value for tax purposes. Center Foundation Applications are being accepted by the Southwest Medical Center Foundation for $100,000 in college scholarships, half of which are reserved for medical center employees and volunteers. The scholarships, which range in value from $1,000 to $5,000, are available for students pursuing a health career course of study. Library District board of trustees will discuss censorship during a
workshop session at 4 p.m. today in the Washougal Community Library,
1661 C Street. No input will be accepted from the public, nor any action
will be taken during the workshop session. The library board, however,
earlier solicited written comments on its Internet filtering policy,
which it will review at the meeting. A regular public meeting of the
trustees follows at 6:15 p.m.

The Vancouver City council meets in workshop session at 4 p.m. today to
discuss design standards being developed for the Vancouver National
Historic Reserve by the city, the National Park Service and the U.S.
Army. The council will go into a closed session at 4:45 p.m. The council
will convene a regular session at 7 p.m. and, among other things, will
consider the creation of an auto dealership plan district.
